Berlin University Alliance – Crossing Boundaries toward an Integrated Research Environment

The strategy “Berlin University Alliance – Crossing Boundaries toward an Integrated Research Environment” was the first successful joint proposal of a university consortium in the Universities of Excellence funding line. The consortium partners in the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) are Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin.

The Berlin University Alliance (BUA) is a consortium of three Berlin universities: Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin, along with Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The BUA was founded in 2019 in the context of the Universities of Excellence funding line of the Excellence Strategy and will be funded with a total of 196 million euros for a period of seven years.

The BUA consortium partners aim to strengthen and internationalise science and humanities in Berlin to create an integrated research environment. To this end, the universities work closely together in the areas of research, teaching and knowledge transfer. The BUA has three thematic focal points:

– Excellent research: The BUA combines its research activities in seven Clusters of Excellence dealing with future topics such as artificial intelligence, health and sustainability.

– International excellence: The BUA promotes the exchange of researchers from all over the world. For that, it offers scholarships and other funding programmes and maintains partnerships with international universities.

– Knowledge transfer: The BUA works with industry and society to transfer new findings from research into practice. To this end, it offers advisory and continuing education services and founds start-ups.
