Clusters of Excellence

NeuroCure – Comprehensive approaches to neurological and psychiatric disorders – from mechanisms to interventions

The focus of our cluster of excellence is on understanding neurological and psychiatric disorders. The aim of this interdisciplinary research network is to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms and, on this basis, to develop new therapeutic approaches.

At the center of our work is the active exchange among researchers and the support of joint research initiatives. In recent years, many new research groups have been established, and modern technological platforms have been set up, opening up new perspectives and opportunities for neuroscience in Berlin.

At the beginning of 2026, NeuroCure entered the fourth funding phase as part of the Excellence Strategy.

In this new funding phase, the cluster unites 24 excellent researchers from clinical and basic research. Each field is known for its strong research, and together the researchers are well positioned to advance both fundamental and translational neuroscience.

NeuroCure continues to focus on projects in three areas of neuroscientific research: developmenthomeostasis, and aging.

Instead of focusing on a single brain disorder, we aim to understand the underlying mechanisms that play a role in the development of different neurological and psychiatric diseases.

By closely connecting basic science and clinical research, new findings can be transferred more quickly into clinical practice. To further speed up this process, NeuroCure has established specific translational modules:

  • NCRC– The Neurological Clinical Research Center within Charité provides researchers with enhanced access to patients, particularly those with acute and severe brain disorders.
  • SPARK– This module aims to accelerate and optimize the translational process.
  • VOS – Value and Open Science– Strengthens the predictive power of our research and thereby improves translation.

Our goal is to bridge the gap between basic research and clinical practice and to make the research environment in Berlin even more attractive and internationally competitive.

Involved Institutions:

  • German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE)
  • Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) im Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V.
  • Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC)
  • Max Plack Unit for the Science of Pathogens (MPUSP)
