A Flagship University – Innovating and Cooperating for a Sustainable Future

In its strategy "A Flagship University – Innovating and Cooperating for a Sustainable Future", Universität Hamburg (UHH) focuses on the topic of sustainability. Further, it intends to intensify the cooperation with other research institutions in the Hamburg metropolitan area to promote internationally visible top-level research.

The Universität Hamburg (UHH) was founded in 1919, being the largest research and educational institution in northern Germany and one of the largest universities in Germany today. Following the strategy of a “Flagship University“, this marks the first time the Universität Hamburg receives funding as a University of Excellence within the Excellence Strategy. In addition to the central topics of research, teaching, knowledge transfer, and research infrastructures, the university’s strategic core theme is internationalization.

Additionally, as one of the first universities in Germany, since 2010 Universität Hamburg has been focusing on sustainability in all its facets and aims to combine the pursuit of academic excellence with a concern to contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015. To this end, a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) was appointed and a Sustainability Office established as part its funding as a University of Excellence.
