Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology (MCQST)

Scientists across the world are expanding the frontiers of our knowledge and experimental capabilities in quantum science. MCQST researchers have played a highly significant role in this endeavor, successfully establishing MCQST as a world-leading research center in quantum science and technology (QST). They have generated seminal scientific advances within QST, which have been recognized through numerous awards and honors. At the same time, MCQST has developed into an anchor point that shapes and develops the Munich quantum ecosystem.

MCQST has also established pioneering educational programs in QST and substantially enhanced the support for early-career scientists. As a result, Munich has developed into one of the most renowned locations for research training and teaching in QST, providing highly qualified talent for both cutting-edge academic research and the rapidly growing quantum industry. MCQST will continue to be the driving force behind these far-reaching activities across the broader QST landscape. While other initiatives in Munich focus on more technological and commercial aspects of quantum technologies, MCQST will lead a wider, more foundational set of efforts centered on fundamental research, early-career development, and excellence in research training and teaching.

The primary objective of MCQST is to discover, understand, and harness the novel and unifying concepts in the interdisciplinary research fields of QST. Our scientific focus is on fundamental research centered around understanding and applying entanglement — a core quantum feature responsible for various intriguing phenomena and applications. Given the established infrastructure and scientific environment, Munich has never been better suited to address the challenging and highly interdisciplinary scientific objectives of MCQST, expanding into new directions in this rapidly developing field of research.

At the same time, we will reinforce our dedication to nurturing education and supporting early-career QST researchers, building on the momentum from the previous funding period (MCQST-1). Furthermore, we will enable expansion programs that support scientists at all career stages, and foster the diversity of our community. Another major effort will focus on internationalization in both research and education in QST. We will enhance interdisciplinary  collaborations within MCQST and with external partners and offer joint educational programs with leading institutions worldwide.
