The cluster is conceived as a transformative space within which to systematically advance the study of Africa and its diasporas via the pursuit of transdisciplinary research, with a strong emphasis on critical area studies, in addition to the disciplines involved. Building on decades of internationally outstanding research in African studies at University of Bayreuth, the cluster develops new approaches to the analysis of African and African diasporic lifeworlds through the lens of multiplicity.
The Cluster of Excellence ct.qmat – Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter is a leading international center for research on topological and complex quantum matter. Our aim is to develop a deep understanding of quantum phenomena in general and to identify materials in which those phenomena are observed in the laboratory.
Today’s sustainable energy research gains momentum by targeting specific energy technologies and their related materials. The cluster e-conversion instead strives to establish a complementary paradigm that bridges major energy conversion strategies ranging from photovoltaics over (photo)electrocatalysis to batteries by focusing on the materials interfaces that underlie these functions.
At a fundamental science level, this includes the comprehensive understanding and control of entanglement in quantum many-body systems spanning different time, length and energy scales, through novel theoretical and experimental approaches in quantum information science. Applications for Quantum Devices and Materials to be developed at MCQST range from inherently secure communication and processing of information to ultrasensitive sensors and transducers for precision metrology.
The Excellence Cluster ORIGINS investigates the origin of the Universe and life. The interdisciplinary research network emerges from the very fruitful collaboration between astro-, particle- and nuclear physicists within the previous Excellence Cluster Universe, which explored fundamental properties of the Universe.
The SyNergy cluster uses an integrative approach to measure, model and modulate the emergence of neurological disease within intact organisms. SyNergy aims to overcome the boundaries between traditional "pathomechanisms" by fostering close interdisciplinary collaboration.
