The Integrated Interdisciplinary University of Science and Technology. Knowledge. Impact. Networks.

RWTH Aachen University (RWTH) has been funded in the Excellence Strategy since 2019. Before, it was also funded in the Excellence Initiative. The title of its overall strategy is "The Integrated Interdisciplinary University of Science and Technology. Knowledge. Impact. Networks."

RWTH Aachen University (RWTH) is one of the largest technical universities in Germany. Through excellence funding, RWTH has developed into an “Integrated Interdisciplinary University of Science and Technology” with a focus on the convergence of knowledge, approaches, and insights from the humanities, economics, engineering, as well as natural and life sciences.

RWTH aims to become a prototype for a “Next Generation University” during the second funding period, capable of delivering reliable solutions for a better, more resilient, and more sustainable life in a rapidly changing and increasingly uncertain world. Key focus areas identified by RWTH for the second funding period are sustainability, health, and the convergence of data and disciplines.

Funded Clusters of Excellence

  • The Integrated Fuel & Chemical Science Center
    The future will be renewable! Shaping a post-fossil era mandates the development of disruptive technologies for the production and use of liquid energy carriers and chemical products as basis for a truly sustainable energy-chemistry nexus within the planetary boundaries. Energyrich molecules harnessing renewable energy jointly with renewable material feedstocks offer an important contribution to the defossilization of the transport sector. This applies especially to long-haul, heavy duty, and non-road applications, which are difficult or even impossible to electrify, yet have significant contributions to the total energy demand. At the same time, energyrich molecules are essential components for a net-zero production of chemicals serving as the foundation for nutrition, health, and prosperity.

    The vision of the Internet of Production (IoP) is to enable a new level of crossdomain collaboration by providing semantically adequate and context-aware data from production, development and usage in real-time, on an adequate level of granularity.

  • ML4Q
    The Cluster of Excellence “Matter and Light for Quantum Computing” (ML4Q) launched its scientific program in 2019. Its goal is to develop the foundations of a comprehensive quantum technology with computing and networking functionality. Leading researchers from the Universities of Cologne, Bonn, and Aachen, together with Forschungszentrum Jülich, are bundling their expertise in the fields of solid-state physics, quantum optics and quantum information to decisively advance this future-oriented field.
