Cross-Cultural Philology. New Perspectives on Premodern Textualities

The Cluster of Excellence "Cross-Cultural Philology" explores philological practices and cultural dynamics across a period of 5,000 years through a cross-cultural approach. Its focus lies on the rich philological traditions of the Near and Middle East, East Asia, the Indian subcontinent, North, East, and West Africa, and Europe. The aim is to identify similarities and differences, continuities and discontinuities, yielding insights far beyond the current state of the art.

By focusing on philology, the Cluster seeks to develop innovative concepts for the future of the humanities. It engages with the cutting-edge opportunities offered by Digital Humanities in order to explore fresh research questions and new areas of knowledge.

In the long term, the Cluster aims to develop a comprehensive history of knowledge and scholarship based on the global comparative study of philological practices. By combining historical and contemporary questions on the theoretical concepts and practical forms of philological work, the Cluster’s interdisciplinary research achieves a level of excellence that promises a high degree of international visibility.

Building on the strength of philological disciplines at LMU, the Clusters top priority is to offer early career researchers a vibrant research environment in which they can produce excellent research.
